Grimm: Of Mouse and Man

“People like that- they deserve to die

Interesting: this episode is sort of based on the obscure Grimm fairy tale The White Snake, but in both title and plot it seems to bear more relation to Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men. There’s even a character called Lennie. Also interesting is that, although Martin Burgess is a sort of mouse creature, this isn’t really the point, being little more than a metaphor for the character’s timidity. That’s interesting; this series as a whole is carrying on the long-standing literary tradition of anthropomorphic  representation of people’s personalities. As far as the creatures are concerned, though, I‘ve increasingly begun to notice that prosthetics are being used in addition to CGI. Good.

The snake creature, on the other hand, is a nasty, smarmy lawyer. Also nasty are the assorted creatures who lure Monroe to a building just so they can duff him up for hanging around with a Grimm. Magnificently, of course, he’s only spurred on further in his partnership with Nick. Monroe is without question the best character in the series. If only he had better taste in beer.

There isn’t much going on in this episode, arc-wise, but it’s a nice little stand-alone tale.
